McDavid Hits 400 Career Goals in Oilers’ Win Over Utah Mammoth

Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid reached 400 career NHL goals Tuesday night, scoring twice in a 5-2 victory over the Utah Mammoth in Salt Lake City.

The 29-year-old center notched his milestone marker with 7:53 left in the second period, taking a pass from Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard before beating Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead.

McDavid got behind the defense, settled a bouncing puck and lifted a shot over Vejmelka’s glove at the 12:07 mark. He added an empty-net goal with just 7.5 seconds remaining to push his total to 401 and cap the scoring.

After the game, McDavid downplayed his finishing touch, noting that putting the puck in the net has never been a natural strength for him despite his reputation as one of the league’s elite scorers. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch praised his star’s deceptive shot and relentless drive to the net, saying it often goes underappreciated amid the hype around his speed. McDavid, who recently clocked a top on-ice speed of 24.61 mph, considers himself primarily a playmaker but has worked to refine his scoring instincts.

The performance marked another entry in McDavid’s decorated ledger. He became the 115th player in NHL history and the 15th active skater to hit the 400-goal plateau, and just the fifth in Oilers franchise history behind Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Leon Draisaitl and Glenn Anderson.

McDavid reached the mark in his 784th game, ranking him fifth all-time in goals since his 2015 debut behind Alex Ovechkin, Draisaitl, Auston Matthews and David Pastrnak.

This season, McDavid has 40 goals and sits second league-wide with 117 points through 72 games, including a league-high 78 assists.

He also hit 1,200 career points Tuesday, becoming the third-fastest to the milestone behind only Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. A five-time Art Ross Trophy winner as the NHL’s points leader and three-time Hart Trophy recipient as MVP, McDavid ranks second in Oilers history in assists and points, trailing only Gretzky.

The win improved Edmonton’s record to 35-28-9, placing them third in the Pacific Division with 79 points, two behind the Anaheim Ducks and one ahead of the Los Angeles Kings. With a strong power play at 31.0 percent — best in the NHL — the Oilers sit in playoff contention as the regular season winds down.
