Max Verstappen Hints at Possible F1 Exit After Disappointing Japanese Grand Prix

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has openly considered leaving the sport at the end of the 2026 season, citing a lack of enjoyment amid the new regulations and Red Bull’s struggles.

The Dutch driver, who dominated from 2021 to 2024, made the comments following a tough weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. He qualified 11th, eliminated in Q2, and finished eighth in the race, stuck behind Pierre Gasly’s Alpine for much of the distance. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Verstappen questioned the value of committing to a full 24-race calendar when the experience no longer brings joy. He weighed the demands of the paddock against time with family and friends, emphasizing that his private life remains fulfilling.

Verstappen’s frustration centers on F1’s 2026 technical rules, which introduce a 50-50 split between internal combustion and electric power. The changes demand heavy energy management, limiting flat-out driving. He described the cars as feeling like “Formula E on steroids” and not much fun, preventing drivers from pushing at full throttle. This follows earlier criticisms, including comparisons to Mario Kart due to battery harvesting effects he called the “mushroom effect.” Despite Red Bull’s early-season woes—no podiums for Verstappen and a ninth place in the standings, 60 points behind leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli—he insisted his realism stems from past non-dominant years, not just results.

His Red Bull contract runs through 2028, reportedly worth $70 million annually, but includes an exit clause tied to performance. Sources indicate he can leave if not in the top two by mid-summer, a threshold unlikely given current form. While some reports suggest a sabbatical over full retirement, Verstappen has long stated he would quit if the sport stops being enjoyable. A four-week break, triggered by canceled Middle East races, now looms as a pivotal period for his decision.
